|
"My inspiration comes from my father; it is also sourced from a pool of great African thinkers, strong black women and from children," says Ugandan born Babiryé Bakwesegha. "I have tried to dedicate a lot of my time to volunteer work and have often felt that it is here where I’ve experienced my greatest challenges but also gained my greatest achievements of which I am proud." Babiryé left Uganda at a very early age, and has lived in various countries. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Mass Communications at the College of Wooster, USA and is currently completing her Master’s in Sociology with a focus on Development at the University of Cape Town. She has interned for Human Rights Watch as a researcher for the African division and currently works for the United Nations Development Programme in the strategic partnerships office. Here, her main area of focus is in the area partnership development between UNDP and international foundations. Her volunteer work spans various continents and has seen her primarily involved in children’s work in a hospital and day care centre in Quito, Ecuador, a home for children from disadvantaged environments in Harlem, New York, and in teaching township women business models and skills in the Western Cape. Babirye played a valuable role in development of the research arm of DEVELOPMENT WORKS during 2006, before she left for America. In her capacity as associate to DEVELOPMENT WORKS, Babiryé is responsible for conducting research for the company’s international arm.
