| Ashley Kundishora, Research Intern |
“A journey of a thousand miles starts with a step.” It might be a known cliché, but it holds true for Ashley, born and bred in Zimbabwe. “I believe that in order to make something happen, you should take the first step towards achieving that goal.”Having identified the need to be a part of the development of Zimbabwe, Ashley decided to major in Sociology and Social Work at the University of Cape Town, for her Bachelor of Social Science degree. This combination gave her a new understanding of how community development and human development are intertwined. She decided to pursue this further, mostly in the field of Social Policy Planning and Management with an Honours Degree she recently completed. She is now continuing with a masters degree in 2010. During the fieldwork attachments for her course she was involved in individual case work, counseling, group facilitation, research work, as well as conducting a community project. She volunteered for SHAWCO (Students Health and Welfare Organisation) as a tutor for grade 7 learners in disadvantaged communities. With the zeal to gain a more in-depth understanding of how project management and development programmes work, she joined Development Works as an intern. “It is indeed an exciting step that has been taken towards achieving my goals”.
