Project name: Evaluation of the South African Child Gauge 2006 Client: Children’s Institute Project duration: June – October 2007 Service: Evaluation, research
The South African Child Gauge is an annual publication that focuses on South Africa’s progress in addressing children’s issues. In June 2007, CREATIVE CONSULTING & DEVELOPMENT WORKS was contracted by the Children’s Institute to conduct an assessment of the 2006 publication that focused on children and poverty.
The research team evaluated the publication in four phases.
• Phase one – desktop review of similar publications
• Phase two – one-on-one interviews with key informants
• Phase three – an electronic survey to all key informants
• Phase four – an assessment of the publication by material development specialists
This approach was aimed at determining target audience perceptions of the South African Child Gauge according to its usefulness, accessibility and credibility. The publication targets government, decision-makers and programme planners, academics, researchers and students, funders and civil society organisations, the media and human rights watchdogs. It is a vital communication tool that contributes significantly to the work of the Children’s Institute.
CREATIVE CONSULTING & DEVELOPMENT WORKS’ assessment of the publication allowed the Children’s Institute to evaluate its capacity for social change in a comprehensive and in-depth manner, thus ensuring the credibility and usefulness of such a communication tool.
